Moldova is a small country located between Romania and Ukraine. Previously part of the Soviet Union, Moldova gained independence in 1991. Romanian is the official language, however, most of the population speaks Romanian, Russian, and “Moldovan."
Today, Moldova is among the poorest European countries with an average annual income of around $5,000. Moldova has suffered from extensive corruption, lack of employment opportunities and lack of accessibility to healthcare.
Moldova currently funds their healthcare system through a mandatory health insurance system. Since 2004, with the installation of this system, the healthcare in Moldova has improved, however, there is still a large need for more specialized care and accessibility to care.
